Exclusive: Community Gaming Lays Off 17 Employees

The Esports Advocate has learned from multiple sources that New York-based esports tournament platform Community Gaming has laid off approximately 17 employees in North America and Turkey.

It is unclear what the impetus for these cuts was, but TEA has reached out to the company and its CEO Chris Gonsalves for further comment and will update this story when more information becomes available.

According to LinkedIn, Community Gaming employs approximately 112 people around the world, but that number should be taken with a grain of salt, as former employees don’t always update their profiles in a timely manner to represent their current work status at a company.

Community Gaming is a strong proponent of Web3, crypto, and blockchain, and describes itself as an “esports tournament and questing platform, building payment infrastructure and community engagement tools to advance the growth of web3 gaming.”

The company has raised a total of $18.5M USD in funding over four rounds since 2019, with investments from BITKRAFT Ventures, Binance Labs, Diverse Angels, Beacon, Animoca Brands, Coinfund, Crowd Venture Capital, Griffin Gaming Partners, SB Opportunity Fund, and Jeff Zirlin.

Interestingly enough, Community Gaming CEO Chris Gonsalves is also the co-founder of the 3XP Gaming Expo and an angel investor in LA-based esports organization Evil Geniuses
