Chinese game publisher Tencent Holdings has decided to cancel the annual Global Esports Summit for 2024. The company held an online live conference “Empower Esports Worldwide” on Monday instead of hosting an in-person Global Esports Summit.

“We would normally be busy preparing for our annual Global Esports Summit, and it would be almost the time to announce it,” Mars Hou, vice president of Tencent Games and general manager of Tencent Esports said during the live conference. “However, while we are facing a new industry trend, we are also shifting our approach. Looking for a more efficient way of connecting and communicating, as we join together to embrace a broader future for the industry.”

Tencent Global Esports Summit started in 2017 and has had seven years of history. Every year executives for Tencent-related esports titles, including League of Legends, Honor of Kings, Peacekeeper Elite, CrossFire, and Call of Duty Mobile, will attend the summit and announce their esports plans.

The Esports Advocate correspondent Hongyu Chen attended the Global Esports Summit from 2018 to 2023. Even during the pandemic, Tencent still held in-person summits in Hainan and Hangzhou. TEA reached out to Tencent Esports for more details and will update the story when we receive a reply.
