Netflix announced via social media Monday that it will be creating film and other entertainment content based on Microsoft’s popular third-person shooter franchise Gears of War. The plan, according to a brief post on Twitter, is to work with developer The Coalition to create a live action feature-length film and then an adult-themed animated series similar to what the streaming service has done with other game properties such as DOTA, Castlevania, Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher, and Riot’s Arcane.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Details on casting, producers, director, and release timing were not revealed as of this writing.

Gears of War took the world by storm when it was released for Xbox 360 (and later other platforms such as PC) on Nov. 7, 2006. The game was originally developed by Epic Games, led by Unreal series designer Cliff Bleszinski (who developed Gears of War 1 – 3), alongside Ryan Cleven, Matthew Searcy. Since that initial release the series, which was bought by Microsoft Game Studios in 2014, has sold well over 15 million copies worldwide, according to VGChartz.

Gears of War also enjoyed a professional esports league for a time, but The Coalition and Microsoft decided to sunset the league in July of this year.
