Scholastic and collegiate esports company PlayVS announced Thursday that it has partnered with Theta Labs to launch a customized AI agent for its North American collegiate esports league, the PlayVS College League (PCL).

Financial terms of this new partnership were not disclosed.

Launching during PCL’s upcoming Spring season, the PCL Bot, which is “trained and deployed on Theta EdgeCloud’s distributed GPU infrastructure,” will be available to answer questions about the league and its operations and provide access to competition information for thousands of students in PCL’s player and fan community across North America. The agent will be via Discord and PCL’s website throughout the collegiate school season.

PlayVS said that the launch of this new AI agent will enable the “PCL team will be better equipped to handle queries and questions from the community at a much more seamless and efficient pace.” The agent will also be able to provide information about match schedules, opponent matchups, league rules, code of conduct procedures, and dispute resolution for college players competing in PCL,” according to the announcement. The PCL Bot will be able to assist users with information on how their colleges can apply to become a PCL member, provide details on eligibility requirements, identify member perks and benefits, and more.

“This conversational AI agent represents the kind of intelligent, responsive technology that actually serves collegiate esports,” said Theta Labs CEO Mitch Liu. “Students get the information they need instantly instead of waiting around in Discord DMs. We’re seeing EdgeCloud become the go-to platform for gaming teams, players, and leagues that want to deploy this type of always-on fan experience, and PCL is a perfect example of how AI can make operations smoother for everyone involved.”

PlayVS joins other esports-related organizations that have deployed AI agents powered by Theta’s technology including Method, 100 Thieves, Dignitas, Gen.G Esports, Cloud9, FlyQuest, NRG, and Evil Geniuses. The company also works with content creators such as YoBoyRoy; NHL teams such as the Las Vegas Knights and New Jersey Devils; and four of the top universities in South Korea. The company is backed financially by Samsung, Sony, Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments, and Creative Artists Agency, among others.

Announced in July 2025, the PCL is a new league aimed at collegiate esports players in North America. Organizers claim that the league has signed deals with more than 1,000 campuses in North America for the 2025–2026 season. The league is ultimately the result of  PlayVS acquiring PlayFly Esports and Generation Esports back in April; Generation Esports owned scholastic esports leagues High School Esports League (HSEL) and Middle School Esports League (MSEL), while Playfly Esports was the collegiate esports arm of collegiate sports company Playfly.
