Malaysia Esports Federation seeks government funding for esports initiatives in 2026.

According to a report in Malaysian publication The Sun, the Malaysian Esports Federation has asked the government agency that oversees sports in the country for more than RM 6 million , or roughly $1.5 million USD to support esports initiatives in 2026.

Citing “strong results in 2025” for the sector, Malaysia Esports Federation President Muhammad Naim Al-Amin Saharuddin told the publication and other reporters that the funds would be used to support tournaments and other esports-related developmental projects during the year. Esports and sports are under the purview of the Malaysia’s Youth and Sports Ministry.

“I believe this sum is sufficient to develop leagues across various esports titles,” he told reporters at a press event at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where he provided a public sendoff to two Malaysian teams—Red Giants and CG Esports—who are competing at the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang World Championship (M7). “They need to be exposed to more tournaments so that we can produce more high-quality esports athletes,” he added.

The Malaysia Esports Federation served as the host and tournament organizer for the International Esports Federation’s only championship level event in 2025: the World Esports Championships 2025 in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang held in Kuala Lumpur from Dec. 1 – 7. The IESF Championship is typically a multi-title affair, but the federation struggled to find a host city for the overall WEC event in 2025. The Esports Advocate chronicled some of those struggles in this report.
