G2 Esports, 100 Thieves, and Team Liquid implement staff reductions at the start of September 2025.

Layoffs took place at three esports organizations in recent weeks including Germany based G2 Esports, North American esports organization 100 Thieves, and international esports organization Team Liquid.

The scale and scope of these layoffs were not disclosed publicly.

100 Thieves Layoffs

Probably the most controversial of the layoffs this week related to Los Angeles-based 100 Thieves, mostly because while they were happening and news of it was breaking in real-time on social media, the company’s co-founder Matthew Nadeshot” Haag was gambling on-stream to promote his new betting sponsor Roobet.

It is unclear how many employees were affected by the recent cuts, and no one from 100 Thieves has addressed the number of layoffs or the reasoning behind them publicly.

Nadeshot would later apologize to fans and the community in a video:

In regards to the recent 100T layoffs and gambling streams this past weekend. The timing was awful. After our last board meeting, I should’ve followed up to learn more about those conversations but I didn’t. For that, I apologize. But hopefully this video clears some things up. pic.twitter.com/60UbwV5hED

Interestingly enough, Roobot is not legal to use in the United States or Europe, the markets where a  majority of Nadeshot’s fans reside.

Regardless of Nadeshot’s apparent lack of awareness on the timing of these layoffs, the decisions at 100 Thieves are ultimately in the hands of the top executives who were promoted when longtime president and chief operating officer John Robinson left in March 2024 and ultimately joined Electronic Arts as the head of corporate development. At the time, the company announced that 100 Thieves Chief Financial Officer Jason Ton had been promoted to chief business officer, SVP of Esports Jacob Toft-Andersen was promoted to president, and SVP for People Julie Van was named the new chief operating officer.

It is unclear just how many employees were affected by these layoffs, but TEA reached out to 100 Thieves and its president Jacob Toft-Andersen prior to the publication of this story. They did not respond to our requests for comment, as of this writing.

G2 Esports

Berlin-based esports organization G2 Esports also initiated some layoffs earlier this month, though the number of affected employees and in what regions they were from remains unknown. TEA reached out to G2 Esports prior to the publication of this story. G2 has a presence in Berlin, Germany; and in Minnesota related to its Call of Duty League franchise Minnesota ROKKR.

The news was broken earlier this month when G2 Esports Senior Graphic Designer Eric Alvarez announced via social media (on X and on LinkedIn) that he had been let go as part of a round of layoffs.

Team Liquid Layoffs

While the exact number of people affected is unknown at this time, a spokesperson for Team Liquid told The Esports Advocate on Monday that the layoffs represented about 6% of its global workforce. Team Liquid currently has offices in Utrecht, Netherlands; Los Angeles, California; and São Paulo, Brazil.

A spokesperson from Team Liquid issued the following statement on the recent layoffs:

“On Monday, we shared with our staff and stakeholders that we’re restructuring the company to sharpen our focus and improve efficiency. As part of this we made the very hard decision to part ways with about 6% of our 300+ global workforce, primarily within our Brand, Marketing, & Content department. These are talented colleagues who’ve helped shape Team Liquid, and we’re deeply grateful for everything they’ve contributed. We’re supporting them with enhanced severance through this transition.

“Change has always been part of our story — from becoming a pro team to merging with Curse to joining forces with STUN.GG — and through it all, we’ve stayed true to our DNA while adapting to whatever the industry throws our way. As our audience and fandom grows, we’re confident we’ll continue creating lasting value for fans and partners alike.”

TEA will update this story if representatives from 100 Thieves or G2 Esports respond.

Editor’s note: A previous iteration of this article referred to Nadeshot as the CEO of 100 Thieves, but he stepped down in that role in 2024 to focus on his streaming career. We apologize for the error. It should be noted that Nadeshot is still active in decisions at the company and regularly attends meetings.
